Builders

Introduction

The devious Builders have advanced technology based on clockwork, steam, and occult engineering. They use their high technology to pillage other lands as air pirates, stealing treasure and slaves alike. Their countries are imperialistic, but lazy, only invading lands whose borders float close to theirs in the mist.

Long ago, they lived with the Growers on Nomina until their own creations, the Awakened, demanded they leave for the sake of the planet. They lost a great deal of technology and expertise in that ancient diaspora, and have only recently surpassed their previous abilities.

The Builders themselves retain the round, child-like faces of their ancestors, but are conservatively colored in skin and hair. Their colors tend towards the ashen end of the spectrum , making them seem less lively than their cousins the Growers.

Builder Racial Traits

Racial Ability Bonuses: +2 Chr, +2 Int, -2 Con and a +2 to one of the remaining ability scores decided at character creation.

Quarter-Construct Builders are quarter-constructs.

  • Quarter-constructs gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against disease, mind-affecting effects, poison, and effects that cause either exhaustion or fatigue.
  • Quarter-constructs are difficult to resurrect. Those who attempt to resurrect a Builder using raise dead, resurrection, or similar spells must succeed at a caster level check equal to 10 + the Builder’s Hit Dice. If this check fails, the spell fails and the caster can’t return the character to life for the next 24 hours (though the caster can try again after this period).

Small: Builders are Small creatures and gain a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a -1 penalty to their Combat Maneuver Bonus and Combat Maneuver Defense, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks.

Slow Speed: Builders have a base speed of 20 feet.

Low-Light Vision: Builders can see twice as far as normal in conditions of dim light.

Beguiling Liar: Builders gain a +4 racial bonus on Bluff checks to lie to an opponent.

Eternal Struggle Builders gain a +4 dodge bonus to AC against Growers.

Everyday Magic Builders may use Mending as per the spell as an at will spell-like ability.

Focused Study: At 1st, 8th, and 16th level, Builders gain Skill Focus in a skill of their choice as a bonus feat.

Master Tinker Builders gain a +1 bonus on Disable Device and Knowledge (engineering) checks. They are also proficient with any weapon they have personally crafted.

Scavenger Builders gain a +2 racial bonus on Appraise and Perception checks to find hidden objects (including traps and secret doors), determine whether food is spoiled, or identify a potion by taste.

Unnatural Builders unnerve normal animals, and train to defend themselves against the inevitable attacks from such creatures. They take a –4 penalty on all Charisma-based skill checks to affect creatures of the animal type, and receive a +4 dodge bonus to AC against animals. Animals’ starting attitude toward Builders is one step worse than normal.

Languages: Builders begin play speaking Barev and Gnomish (Builder). Builders with high Intelligence scores can pick up to six other starting languages usually in line with the Shard they come from.
